Wales Veterans over 40s made the long trek to North Wales to face Caerwys Vets over 35s at the home of Hollywell Town AFC.
The eight hour round trip proved well worth it as the Wales representative squad ran out 2-1 winners against their younger opponents. Manager Laurence Owen, who was without 7 members of his squad for this fixture, still managed to take a strong squad of 15 players.
The first half ended 0-0 but it could have been 4-4 with both defences making mistakes and both attacks guilty of missing chances but, to be fair, this has got to go down to lack of playing time over the last 18 months.
Wales began to get a stranglehold on the game early in the second half and the ever fleet-of-foot 49 year old Phil Tranter was at the heart of lots of the Wales positivity. His run on 59 minutes took him past two players before crossing to debutant Craig Reddy, who's shot opened the scoring. Tranter continued to torment Caerwys with his direct running and on 72 minutes he found the imposing figure of Gavin Beddard who was was brought down in the box after a strong run. Tranter gratefully despatched the resultant penalty.
Although the hosts got a goal back 4 minutes from time, after a defensive mix up from a throw-in, the visitors held out to take the spoils against a side that are rarely beaten.
Many thanks to Caerwys for the fixture and Holywell Town for hosting the game. We are hoping to welcome them to Cardiff in the near future.
Congratulations to the squad...
