Wales Veterans' Football accepted an invitation from the Lincolnshire Veterans League and after an early start the o50s and o60s squads set off on their long trip to Grantham writes Paul Averies....
The o60s kicked off at midday and in a tight game between two very good teams, the first half was a pretty tight affair and it remained scoreless going into the interval. Ten minutes into the second half the hosts scored when their striker got away from the Wales defence and slotted home past keeper John Jones. Wales needed to up their game and they did. Manager Jon Parkinson shuffling his team to good affect. Wales got on top and equalised through Jeff White bullet header at the far post from a cultured cross from Steve Thomas. Wales pushed hard for the win with 15 to go and did have their chances ,but Lincolnshire 60s held on for the draw in a excellent game of football.
The o50s took to the field for a 2pm ko in a game that Wales dominated from the kick-off, taking the lead after only 2 minutes and going 3 up on 30 minutes. Lincolnshire then had their best spell and managed to score a good goal with Wales a bit sloppy at the back and it stayed 1-3 until half time.
In the second half Wales played some great football and as Lincolnshire tired they went on the rampage with plenty of goals for their efforts winning emphatically 10. 1, with a Phil Tranter hat-trick, and further goals from, Andrew York, Mark Anthony Smith, Karl Miller, Damon Brown, David Murray, Rogan Mathews and Nicky Francis.
