Wales o65s draw with England!

By Alun Huish

Wales o65s scoreless against England at Loughborough on 26th April

Wales Veterans' Football's recent excursion to Loughborough, for an o65s international against England, finished scoreless following a finely balanced and competitive encounter.

Wales started in their usual dynamic, but slightly erratic fashion. Talisman Bobbett was being well-marshalled by England MoM Don Bradley but Peter Morgan was causing real problems on the left and was unlucky not to see one of his crosses converted. After 15 minutes of endeavour but with too many passes going astray or not being retained, England started to control matters. Their more measured, possession-based build-up, initiated by former Watford legend Coffill, saw them create several decent opportunities despite the defiant Welsh rear-guard. But they had to thank keeper Meacham, back to his imperious best, who's assured handling denied England an opener, particularly a spectacular point-blank save just before the break.

During the interval, manager, Huish re-emphasised the need to keep to the game plan and maintain accuracy and discipline....and his charges certainly carried out those instructions in the second half. Welsh captain Branch was orchestrating, MoM Rowlands was ubiquitous, and Jason Morgan had a fine debut. Wide-men Evans and Brown were now influencing proceedings, the latter hitting an upright and Mackay's tenacity enabled Morgan to get in a snap-shot, which was well-saved by England keeper Kirk. The fitness of the visitors was particularly impressive but goal-mouth incident was only ‘occasional’, which underlined the defensive superiority of both teams and although Wales finished the stronger a draw was probably a fair result.
