Wales took an extremely strong and experienced over 60’s squad to face England B at Kirby Muxloe and returned with a well-earned win..writes Neil Giles…
Pre match instructions were to start strong, keep possession and play through the phases. Wales did exactly that with an England side chasing the ball. On the 10th minute a sublime cross from Gary Vaughan was met expertly by Pepe Mele whose bullet header was the opening goal we deserved. Wales pushed on after the goal and again left England wanting all over the field of play. This continued with a strong midfield of Vaughan, Dyke, Griffiths, Radford and Babbitt who were all in total control.
The second half was much the same with Wales pressing and pushing on time after time in search for the second goal. Unfortunately Wales were left wanting in front of goal but the chances they created were unbelievable and encouraging. Wales defence were solid and dealt with the small amount that England threw at them. John Jones was very vocal in goals as always but marshalled his defence superbly and deserved his clean sheet. Medwin was untroubled and calm and collected in possession. England felt that they had got off extremely lightly with a 1-0 loss as the amount of possession and goalmouth pressure it could have been 10. The England team had managed just one shot in the entire game which shows just how much we had dominated the game.
The Wales management handed two new internationals an into the squad who both shone on their debut, Andrew Radford and Dewi Baldwin.
A magnificent effort from an excellent Wales squad and a thoroughly deserved win.
