The Wales Veterans' Football Association accepted an invitation to send an o45s squad to face a Royal Wootton Bassett o35s side at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground in Wiltshire on 15th March 2025, at 1pm and came away with an impressive win...writes manager, Paul ‘Ricky’ Richards...
Wales started strongly with a high percentage of possession and Gessy Rees having lots of opportunity down the right side. This created early opportunities for Bartley and Davies but neither were able to convert. Further great build up play allowed Jonny Taylor to burst into the box only for his goal to be disallowed for offside. Steve Lewis came on to make his Welsh Veterans debut and with minutes, he pressed the Wotton defence and keeper into an error, from which he gratefully slotted home. With half-time approaching, the hosts pushed for an equaliser but found Harding, Davey and keeper, Morgan in defiant mood and the visitors went into the interval, 1nil to the good.
Wales started the second half slowly, allowing Wotton Bassett more time on the ball and within 3 mins they equalised after a quick break and great finish. The hosts continued to cause problems as the second half wore on and they could have scored a second, but Wales finished the game strongly and after great inter-play from Summer, Davies and Bartley, Davies laid the ball onto Summers, who finished in style to put Wales back into the lead. Wotton pushed for the equaliser and almost did so, but Davies, in goal for the second half pulled of a top class save to give Wales the win.
Manager, Paul ‘Ricky’ Richards’ enthused “this was a great, hard-fought win and reflects the standards in the Wales Veterans' FA, WorkwearSupermarket.com over 45's League this year”!
