The Wales Veterans' Football Association accepted an invitation to send an o40s Representative squad to face League 'newcomers, Briton Ferry Llansawel, in a friendly at Penyrheol Leisure Centre....where a goal in each half from Penydarren's Craig Reddy (pictured) was enough to give Wales victory....writes a pitch-side reporter.
Despite players being unavailable, manager Laurence Owen was able to name a strong 17 man squad that included debutants Lee Stone from Llanelli and Penydarren‘s Scott Pike and the return of Craig 'Guppy' Hughes after a year out through injury was a big boost.
Wales dominated long spells of the game and had the majority of the possession with the 4-3-3 formation causing lots of problems for the very strong and capable hosts. The pressing from the front and the possession game should have resulted in more goals but on the day Wales found the 'home' keeper in outstanding form.
Manager Owen was pleased with the win and praised the opposition saying “they contributed to an excellent game and had a number of stand-out performers that impressed, but on the day the ‘Rep’ squad had a little too much quality.” He added “I’d like to thank Briton Ferry for their hospitality and wish them good luck, in what is sure to be a successful season ahead”.
