Wales Veterans' Football accepted an invitation from Barmouth AFC to take an o40s squad to take on their o35s on the north west coast of wales and secured a creditable draw...
Manager, Laurence Owen took a depleted 40s squad to the Wern Mynach Ground in the lovely town of Barmouth where, a 4 hour journey, scorching weather and a squad of just 15 that included two over 55 year olds, could not prevent a sterling performance against a younger opponents.
Debuts were given to Careau Ely's Graham Cummings & Ponthir's Micheal Hard with both players impressing, the latter getting the wales goal on 33 minutes with a bullet header from a pin point Darren Thompson cross. Despite losing Skipper Craig Hughes after only 16 minutes the visitors dominated the first half and took a deserved lead into the interval.
The home side equalised immediately after the break with a Russell Jones strike and, with the injury to Hughes and defender Jamie hillier, the second half was a much more even affair...a 1-1 draw a fair result.
Owen was delighted with the result, enthusing "the squad performed heroically in the circumstances and our thanks go to our hosts for a great game and for their post match hospitality - which certainly eased the long journey home."
Wales Veterans' Football hope to invite Barmouth to Cardiff for a return fixture during the forthcoming season.
