Early last year Wales Veterans Football lost one of its former players, Rob Poyner. Rob, who played in goal for both Taff's Well and Mathern Vets and represented the Wales over 50s, sadly passed away in April 2020 with throat cancer at just 60 years of age.
As a mark of respect to a talented player and good friend to many in our Organisation, a memorial match in his honour, between Wales o40s and a Rob Poyner XI, took place at Ponthir Cricket Club on today.
A Ben Bannon hat-trick and further goals from Phil Tranter (2) Craig Reddy & Anthony Ferguson gave Wales a 7-1 victory. More importantly the game raised £300 for Guts Uk Charity from donations from Committee and players.
The game was enjoyed by a large crowd and played in a very keen intense manner but in a spirit that matched the occasion.
Newport County Manager Mike Flynn made his Wales debut, Food and drinks were enjoyed by all after the game and Rob’s sons Gary and Robert were presented with the memorial cup.
Thanks go to everyone for a great effort, including both squads, who helped to make it a memorable day....and one that Rob would have been truly proud of...
