Penybont remain unbeaten and stay top!

Merthyr tydfil 0 v 5 Newport
After an evenly balanced start with opportunities at both ends Newport started to dominate and took the lead from a smart finish from John Williams. Williams completed his first half double to put Newport 2-0 up at the break. Merthyr played nice football through the game but were found lacking in the final third. Williams added two more goals in the second half finishing smartly before Cellupica made it 5 in the closing stages and Newport run out convincing winners.

Barry 0 v 4 Penybont
A strong Penybont continued their fine form in the o65s League, with a deserved win against a depleted and lack-lustre Barry Town outfit. Poor defending led to an early goal for league leaders Penybont, who were strong in all departments. Captain, Davies, again, starred, allowing Barry very little opportunity up top. Paul Morgan, Veasey and Steer were on target but Pick of the goals was Peter Morgan’s mazy run into the Barry box late on, before rounding keeper Jones for an easy tap in.

Pontyclun 0 v 1 Swansea
A physical and tightly contested first half finished with a soft Griffiths free kick which confused keeper Eastman at the near post. This followed two ugly incidents leading to the sending off of two Pontyclun players, Drew and Sharpe, within a matter of minutes. Despite being two men down ‘Clun’ rallied in the second half and came close to getting an equaliser on a number of occasions. Swansea held on to a 1-0 win although they made hard-work of a game they should have closed-out with ease, but they remain hot-on-the-heels of leaders Penybont.

13th November 2024
Barry Town 3, Newport 1
A good win for Barry, who took the lead on 10 minutes when Bobbett seized onto a slick pass from Evans. Although Barry edged possession, playing into the low-sun affected accuracy and Newport’s Guscott and Williams were a threat on the break, the latter forcing a decent save from keeper, Blackie who was unable to prevent Cellupica from equalising. Barry pressed forward and Bobbett lashed in a fine second after several wayward efforts, most notably by Huish. Staddon gave the ‘hosts’ a 2-1 lead at half-time.
Barry were more controlled after the interval and should have increased their lead despite the defiant defending of Jordan and Brustad. Branch hit a post after a flowing move; Morgan saw his fine header saved by Newport gloveman, Price and Evans failed to pull the trigger after a dazzling run past 4 defenders. The Gwent side pushed for parity, but Blackie was rarely troubled and his side earned the 3 points.

Penybont 3, Pontyclun 3
The League’s two unbeaten sides shared the spoils in an entertaining match in the bright Autumn sunshine. Pontyclun started on the front foot with an early strike from White, but when Penybont scored 3 goals in quick succession through Steer, Les Davies and Peter Morgan, they took a healthy two-goal lead into half time.
A defiant ‘Clun pressed forward and squared the game through Maclachan and Sharp and they could have stolen a win late on, but the game ended in a draw and Penybont maintain their position at the top of the o65 WorkwearSupermarket.com League table.

Swansea 7, Merthyr Tydfil 2
A convincing win for the clinical Swans who were second-best to their opponents until Leigh scored for the ‘hosts’, against the run of play. A determined Merthyr equalised minutes later through O’Sullivan but two quick goals from Griffiths and Pasquantonio put Swansea in the box-seat going into the interval.
Further goals in the second half by Barletta, Algieri (2) and a super strike by the influential Pasquantonio sealed victory. Fisher scored a late consolation for Merthyr.

23rd October 2024
Pontyclun 3, Merthyr Tydfil 2
Pontyclun continued their unbeaten record against a rejuvenated Merthyr team, who took the lead through Challenger. Pontyclun took a 2-1 lead with a brace by White but when Lambert equalised the match looked like ending as a draw, but Bassett scored 8 minutes from time to give Pontyclun the points.

Newport 2, Penybont 3
Penybont made it 3 from 3 with a good win against Newport. The ‘Morgans’ Paul (2) and Peter secured victory for the Bridgend boys against their hard-working opponents who scored through Guscot and James.

Barry Town 1, Swansea 2
A fine defensive effort and greater accuracy secured victory for the Swans. Swansea captain, Griffiths scored against the run of play after 15 minutes and, despite a lot of huffing and puffing, it was well into the second half until Bobbett equalised. Barry continued to command the lions share of possession but the all-whites were defiant and a defensive error at the other end was seized upon by an alert Pasquantonio, who fired home to seal victory.

11th September
Newport 1, Pontyclun 2
A good, competitive encounter saw Gartside give the hosts the lead on the 30 minutes and they led until the hour mark when man-of-the-match, Thomson equalised. White scored the winner minutes later to secure the points for Pontyclun.

Penybont 1, Swansea 0
A close encounter between two sides who had secured a win in the first round of games in September. Although Penybont had the greater firepower, it was the visitors who went closest, when they were denied from the penalty spot by Penybont keeper, Pearce. Swans keeper, Meacham was called into action, making a superb, full length save from Jason Morgan early in the second half. He couldn’t deny Veasey who secured the points on the hour for Penybont, who sit at the top of the table.

Merthyr Tydfil 0, Barry Town 3
The visitors claimed the points as Merthyr were unable to field a side

11th September
Pontyclun 1, Barry Town 1
Barry dominated much of this game and took the lead on 12 minutes with a well-taken penalty from Staddon, when Evans was tripped in the box. However, they failed to extend their lead through a combination of their profligacy and stubborn Pontyclun defending, particularly by Thomson and Ryan. Inevitably, an error in the Barry ranks allowed a determined Maclachlan to drill home an equaliser two minutes from time to secure a share of the spoils for his Pontyclun side, which contained several ‘old’ faces making a welcome return to Wales Veterans’ Football.

Swansea 2, Newport 0
In a fairly even game, Swansea claimed 3 valuable points against their opponents with Pasquantonio pulling the strings...despite a tantrum in the first half and captain, Jeff Griffiths slotting two second half goals to win the points.

Penybont 6, Merthyr Tydfil 0
An emphatic win by Penybont against a Merthyr team who started well before succumbing to the greater firepower of their opponents. Veasey, making a welcome return after illness, gave his team the lead, before Peter Morgan, Paul Morgan and Nick Moglia and an unfortunate own-goal by Newton secured the points for the Bridgend side before half-time.
