Big win for Merthyr, but Llanelli stay top!

23rd March
Pontyclun 0, Merthyr Tydfil 7
An emphatic win for the visitors at Pontypridd’s Martime Field...writes Dave Keane.... A painful Friday night for Pontyclun as they were swept aside by an excellent Merthyr team. Powell opened the scoring for the hosts in the 5th minute and it was one way traffic from then on with a brace from both Davies and John as well as goals from Smith and Harrison.

16th March
Cwmbran Celtic 0, Nelson Cavaliers 1
The visitors secured a hard-fought win at the Avondale Arena with Troy Roberts grabbing the all-important winner.

Newport 0, Merthyr Tydfil 4
The visitors come out on top in a competitive match from start to finish...writes Ricky John... Merthyr started the match on the front foot and deservedly opened the scoring early on through a Ricky John goal. Newport defended well for the remaining half and the score-line was a tight 1 nil at half time. Merthyr were more clinical after the break and got their rewards with further goals from Ricky John, Robert Manning and Robbie Lew.

Penybont 6, Cardiff Academicals 1
The hosts claimed victory with a strong performance at Pencoed College...writes Chris Davies...Savage (2), Wells, powell, Griffiths and a Chandler OG were enough to secure the points. Cardiff academicals kept going on a windy, cold day and Lazarou got a late consolation.

The Continental 2, Llanelli Town 5
A win for the visitors in a hard-fought contest at Eastern High School...writes Neil Bryant.... A fantastic advert for o50s football with two excellent sides playing out a hard-fought contest and despite both sides missing some players there was still plenty of quality on the pitch.
The visitors started well and created chances only for Toop in the home goal making several good saves. The visitors broke the deadlock with the speedy Rogers getting in behind the defence after being put through by McClarnan and slotting home. The following period of play saw continental gain the upper hand and the home side levelled the score with an emphatic Wigley strike. Continental went ahead after a lapse of concentration by the Reds which allowed Burnham to slip through the defence and slot past the keeper. This then kick started the champions who deservedly equalised through ‘Willy’ from a square ball from Rogers. Continental had the chance to take the lead but their free kick from 20 yards was well saved by the visiting keeper, Bryant. The Reds then went in-front via a bullet header from Carl McClarnan off a corner. With their tails up, they upped their work rate and went further ahead when the ever dangerous ‘Willy’ Williams thumped home a first-time shot from a Steve Blackford cross.

Swansea 4, Pontyclun 2
The hosts secured a deserved win at Penyrheol Leisure Centre....writes Huw Davies...Swansea welcomed their friends from Pontyclun and although only 1-0 up at half time through Taneja, Swansea were dominant with possession and territory. Pontyclun started the second half with far more intent, but despite this Swansea went into a 3-0 lead with Evans and Kennedy on target. A chaotic last few minutes saw Pontyclun pull two goals back through Salmon and Murray, before Swansea Taneja netted again in the last minute.

9th March
Llanelli Town 14, Cwmbran Celtic 0
Llanelli’s Neil ‘Willie’ Williams was, once again, the ‘star-man’ with 10 (ten) goals....writes Neil Bryant..... A ruthless Llanelli showed little mercy at Penrhos School to a Cwmbran side that travelled west with a bare 11. For the first 15 minutes, there was nothing much to separate the sides, but that changed when Neil Williams opened the scoring and the same player scored again within minutes. Cwmbran suffered a setback by losing a player through injury which truly was a turning point in the game. The Reds took advantage of the extra man and further goals from Williams, Rogers, Davies and a Williams hat-trick sent the Reds into the interval 6-0 up.
The second half carried on in the same fashion, though credit to Cwmbran for their never-say-die attitude. Cerison Davies got his second from the penalty spot then a further seven goals were scored by no other than Neil ‘Willy’ Williams taking his tally to 10 for the game!

2nd March
Nelson Cavaliers 1, The Continental 3
The visitors took the points in an evenly matched game at Wern Park...writes Rod Powell... This was a very close, end-to-end contest until the last 20 minutes when ‘Conti’s’ better fitness told. Thompson scored followed by a Wigley penalty before Manley secured the result minutes from time. Headon converted a late penalty for the hosts which gave a better reflection of the game.

Merthyr Tydfil 1, Penybont 5
A fine win for the visitors at Penydarren Park with a fabulous four from MoM Andrew Davies....writes Chris Davies....An even first half saw Merthyr take the lead after 25 minutes through Lynch. Penybont equalised minutes later through Davies to make the score 1-1 at the interval. Merthyr had chances in the first 10 minutes of the second half half but failed to capitalise. Penybont grew into the game and ran out worthy winners with 3 further goals from Davies and another for Powell, in a great advert for vets football.

Llanelli Town 7, Swansea 1
Llanelli’s Neil Williams was the ‘star-man’ even though the visitors should have taken the lead in first 20 minutes....writes Simon Rogers.....After an even first-quarter at Penrhos School the game was turned on its head in a 10 minute spell when the ever-clinical Williams scored four to give his team a comfortable half-time lead. Any hope of a comeback was put to bed within minutes of the restart when a pin-point strike from Davies found the bottom corner. Kennedy scored a deserved consolation from the penalty spot but 2 further goals from Williams, taking his tally 6, made the final score 7-1 and the Reds still sit comfortably on top of the O50s WorkwearSupermarket.com League.

Cardiff Academicals 1, Pontyclun 3
The visitors edged a close game between two well matched sides...writes Danny.... In a good game played in great spirit, the hosts took the lead midway through 1st half after some good play with Bell scoring from distance. The visitors pulled one back when Murray bundled in from close range and they took a lead into half-time when Griffiths reacted quickest after an initial save from keeper, Burton. Dryden extended Pontyclun’s lead from the penalty spot and credit to ‘Clun’ keeper, John who pulled off a string of good saves to prevent an Accies comeback.

Newport 1, Cwmbran Celtic
The visitors secured their first win of the season at Llanwern High.

16th February
Cardiff Academicals 1, Llanelli Town 12
The hosts received a thrashing by a rampant Llanelli Town at Cardiff University Fields....writes Simon Rogers...An open game of football in which the final score doesn’t reflect the effort put in by the Accies who had a good share of the ball. Accies thought they’d got off to the perfect start when awarded an early penalty however Neil Bryant showed his quality in goal once again with a fine save to keep the scores level early on. Llanelli took the lead when a fine header from debutant Patrick Lord squeezed in at the near post and further goals first half followed from Simon Rogers and Steve Blackford (x2) which included a sumptuous shot from outside the area into the top corner from the right boot of Blackford which was undoubtedly goal of the game.

The second half saw Accies pull a goal back after some excellent passing down the left to score a well worked goal through Patrick ‘Paddy’ Chichester however further goals from Rogers who was now stretching the Accies defence with his pace, a 3rd for Blackford to complete a hat-trick all from his ‘weaker’ right boot, Vaughan Jones and five from Neil ‘Willy’ Williams, who finally found his scoring boots ensured the win for Llanelli Town to remain top of the league. Great welcome as always from a hugely respected Accies who kept going to the final whistle and are a credit to the league...

Cwmbran Celtic v The Continental
Match postponed – pitch unplayable

Penybont 5, Newport 1
The hosts claimed victory in a competitive game at Pencoed College...writes Chris Davies...A competitive game from start to finish with Newport competing well against a younger Penybont squad. Andrew Davies put Penybont ahead after 20 minutes capitalizing on a defensive mistake to slot home. A Ceri Thomas header saw Penybont 2-0 up at the break. Ben Griffiths scored a great header to put Penybont 3 up early in the 2nd half before some great saves from keeper Jodi Harris frustrated Newport at the other end. Further goals from Lewis and Miller killed the game before Fredrickson scored a deserved consolation for the visitors. Great game played in the right spirit from start to finish.

Pontyclun v Merthyr Tydfil
Match postponed – pitch unplayable

Swansea 0, Nelson Cavaliers 1
The visitors took the points in an evenly matched game at Penyrheol Leisure Centre...writes Huw Davies...A tenacious Nelson team set up well and were dogged in defence. Swansea huffed and puffed dominating possession and any chances created were saved by Nelson goalkeeper, Chris Williams, in a man of the match performance.

2nd February
Penybont 17, Cwmbran Celtic 0
A one-sided affair from start to finish at Pencoed College...writes Chris Davies...’Elvis’ put through his own net to start the scoring and left the building half way through the 2nd half after picking up an injury. Cwmbran kept at it all game but Penybont had a younger, fitter, full strength squad on the day. Goals from Vince Lewis (5) Dean Taylor (3), Steve Powell (2), Phil Wells (2), Ben Griffiths (making his 50s debut), Karl Miller, Andrew Davies and Chris Davies with the goal of the game right at the death!! Star of the show was ‘Elvis’ as always

Newport took a 2-1 lead into the interval with goals from Watkins and Willis, with Grant scoring for the visitors. Pontyclun raised their game in the second half with 3 more from Murray, Griffiths and Grant (with his second). A third goal for a spirited Newport from Powell made for a nervy last 20 until a well-taken Dryden goal sealed the deal for Pontyclun.

Nelson Cavaliers 1, Cardiff Academicals 3
The visitors took the points in an evenly matched game at Wern Park...writes Stuart Hitchings... Accies broke the deadlock just before half time with a goal from Dave Evans, slotting home from an Andrew Lazarou cross. In the 2nd half it was Lazarou's turn and a run from a Gary Pinkard through ball, to get inside the defence and slide in to score past the Nelson keeper. The home-side pressed forward and were unlucky not to get one back early in the 2nd half after creating some good chances. Nelson did get back into the game from a Clive Headon penalty 5 minutes from time, but Accies secured the 3 points when Paddy Chichester slotted home on 80 minutes from a Steve Maidment pass.

Merthyr Tydfil 2, Llanelli Town 3
A fine win for the visitors at Penydarren Park...writes Ricky John... in a fantastic advert not just for vets football but football in general!
Llanelli took the lead through Simon Rogers but Merthyr got themselves deservedly level through Robert Manning. Highlight of the half was a world class save from ‘mad monk’ Boulton in goal.
The 2nd half followed a similar pattern, with end to end football and both teams missing chances. Manning scored a 2nd for Merthyr but they couldn't add a 3rd and Llanelli made them pay with an Andy Legg equaliser. A draw looked on the cards but Simon Rogers pounced on a loose ball to pinch it for Llanelli with just minutes remaining.
