The Wales Veterans FA proudly hosted an o65s international match between Wales and England at the FAW's Dragon Park Stadium in Newport on 21st June and Wales, inspired by the National Anthem sung by Newport City Choir, delivered with a deserved 2-0 win.
Wales introduced several uncapped players into the squad including new captain Rowlands, who took his place alongside Diaper and Jones in the engine room. Goalkeeper Alan Meacham played behind a back four of Brustad, Jordan, Sasha Young and Williams who were excellent on the day and kept the dangerous English attack to just a couple of opportunities. 'Newcomer' Steer led the line with the Morgan and Algeri flanking either side.
Wales started well and although the passing was a little laboured and the expected fluency was not quite there, Rowlands, Jones and Diaper were running the show, the latter having an outstanding game and setting an example on how to look after the ball. The Wales defence was very comfortable and Morgan panicked the England back line every time he was on the ball, but no clear chances were created and it was scoreless going into the break.
Changes were made with Caffell, Dickinson, Owen and Compton all making telling contributions but it was a piece of magic by Morgan who fired the ball past a helpless Stannard in the England goal to give Wales a 1-0 lead. Further changes saw Hold, Bowker and Morgan enter the frey, the latter smashing home from an inch to seal Wales' win and the Dermot Gallagher Trophy.
