Wales o50's ran out comfortable 1 - 6 winners against a stubborn Newport Vets team...writes Gavin Price.
The o50s were playing in their first competitive match under the new Management team of Gavin Price (pictured) and Shane Davies, the latter also playing, having just passed his 50th birthday. Newport 50s made it difficult against a very professional Welsh team which incorporated several new faces.
Price made a clever tweak to the formation which worked really well and the goals came thick and fast. Michael Fredriksen scored after 15 minutes, followed by John Paul 22 mins and Ian Burman gave Wales a 0 - 3 lead going into half time.
Price made 4 changes at half time introducing Lewis and Thompson whose sheer pace troubled the hosts. Both had several good chances before Thompson tucked one away on 50 mins.
Man of the Match chosen by Price was Nicky Francis who provided 2 assists before scoring the 5th goal himself on 70 mins.
Hardly any attacking threat was made by Newport until Wales goal keeper, John Bailey, spoiled an otherwise exemplary performance with a rare error late in the game trying to rush a quick goal kick. But, Frederickson had the last laugh scoring his 2nd and Wales 6th, 5 minutes from time.
Future games are going to see more dangerous opposition but this was a very impressive performance from the squad with a special mention to Debutants Stevie John and Shane Davies.
