Another good win for Wales Vets 40s

A Wales Veterans Football over 40s representative squad played their third game in as many weeks as they travelled to Devizes Town FC on Sunday to take on their over 35s in a charity game which raised over £3000 for Dementia UK and Macmillan Cancer.

Despite Manager Laurence Owen being without as many as 14 squad members he was still able to name a strong squad of 16 players - a real testament to the strength of the depth in the 40s Leagues.

The side were captained by Newport County Manager Mike Flynn making his second appearance in the centre of midfield which also included debutant Andrew Cook. In a tight first half it was Wales who controlled much of the play but found Evans in the Devizes goal in fine form with his handling and shot stopping. Strikers Tranter and Price were a handful up front with their constant running and probing and Flynn and Reddy in the midfield were pulling the strings, but it was still 0-0 going into the interval.

The second half was a much more open game as the home side tired Wales upped the pace of the game and took control and goals by Matt Price, Phil Tranter, Craig Reddy and the pick of the bunch a Johnny Williams bullet header from a pinpoint Reddy corner. Devizes got a consolation goal 2 minutes before time to end an entertaining 90 minutes.

Our thanks to Devizes for the invitation and for their superb fundraising on the day which will assist such good causes, we hopefully will set up another fixture home or away in the future.
