The Wales Veterans' Football Association accepted an invitation to send a mixed squad to the Midlands, to face Market Harborough FC in aid of the Squires Effect Charity....writes 'stand-in' Manager, Dave Murray...
After a four hour journey to Market Harborough, inevitably Wales started slow and were caught out with a long ball over the top with the Market Harborough striker taking an early shot to beat Wales keeper, John Howe. The visitors finally got up to speed and played some decent football, which was unfortunately disrupted when Bassett suffered a serious knee injury and had to be replaced by 60 year old Dave Murray! Wales took control in midfield after changing the system and this worked well and enabling Steve Davies to score twice and hit the crossbar twice after some lovely footwork. Wales created a number of chances and could have been out of sight but for some fine saves by the opposition keeper and some profligacy in front of goal....and this was to prove costly.
In the second half the hosts equalised through a wonder goal from 30 yards hitting top right hand corner and with 5 mins remaining the referee awarded a controversial penalty to the home side which was duly dispatched and Wales unfortunately lost out 3-2.
